Study Social Work, Speech Language Hearing Sciences & Criminal Justice in Ireland

Study Peace, Reconciliation and Restorative Justice in Ireland

Travel Dates: May 14 - June 2, 2023

Study Abroad in Ireland Program Overview:

This course is a three-credit spring 23 courses for Social Work, Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences, and Criminal Justice students. This elective course will focus on the social, political, and cultural realities of an island once marked by intense conflict and sectarian violence. Students will examine how contemporary political communities use the past to construct traditions, ideologies, and identities that simultaneously bring divergent groups together and separate them. Participants will visit several grassroots agencies that work with divided communities to foster peace and reconciliation in Ireland and Northern Ireland. A special emphasis will be an examination of the provision of SLHS, criminal justice, and social work services from an Irish perspective. Time will also be devoted to appreciating the sites and culture of Ireland. Participants will visit ancient castles, museums, and natural wonders (such as the Giant’s Causeway and the Slieve League)

Prior to travel, students will participate in a series of preparation seminars that will focus on the history of Ireland/Northern Ireland, the Troubles, concepts of macro peace and reconciliation efforts, Irish culture, and international travel. The travel component of the course will include time in Dublin (where accommodations will be homestays with Irish families), Belfast, Derry/Londonderry, Glen Colm Cille, and Galway. While in Ireland the students will also have an opportunity to visit faculty and students from Trinity College Dublin.
