Communication Arts & Literature Education
If you are passionate about impacting the lives of young people through the world of communication and literature, MSUM’s Communication Arts & Literature Education degree is a perfect fit to prepare you for public or private teaching careers in middle through high school. You’ll learn to share your love of language and literature while enhancing your knowledge and world view through comprehensive coursework.
Our small campus and class sizes help you get to know your professors professionally and personally. Faculty in the CAL major are committed to your professional growth and are highly accessible and approachable, providing quick responses to your questions.
You’ll enjoy myriad opportunities for hands-on teaching experiences, such as tutoring at the University Writing Support Center or completing your required practicum hours at community locations such as the alternative high school or county jail.
Whether it’s the small class sizes or the type of students the CAL major attracts, there’s a huge support system in the program. Peers rally together to accomplish goals such as collecting books for needy children or perfecting instructional techniques through mock teaching. That support continues beyond graduation to professional support and networking.
You have the opportunity to attend professional conferences such as Minnesota Council of Teachers of English and to present faculty-mentored or individual research you have conducted in an area of your interest.
If you choose to complete MSUM’s Publishing certificate, you will gain understanding about the business of publishing from the ground up. It’s excellent preparation if you advise student high school publications, such as the yearbook or school newspaper.
At MSUM we’re committed to providing you the best opportunities to expand your knowledge and skills throughout your entire university career.
