Collection Description

This collection contains old photographs, newspaper articles, newspapers, books, pamphlets and broadsides pertaining to the history of Minnesota, the Red River Valley and individual communities in northwest Minnesota. The newspapers in this collection are anniversary editions and contain town histories and biographies of early settlers. Most of the photographs are dated but unidentified. There are also newspaper articles about steamboats on the Red River and reminiscences by one time steamboat owner Henry W. Alsop and his son H.L. Alsop.

      • The Golden Jubilee Edition of this paper was put out in conjunction with the celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Fergus Falls' incorporation as a city. There are articles on Joe Whitford, who, along with being the first white settler in Fergus Falls, gave the city its name. There are also articles on the history and growth of the city and of the paper, an account of Otter Tail City during its boom days and reminiscences by early settlers. In addition, there is a speech given by C.J. Hilton which concentrates on the growth of education in Fergus Falls and in Minnesota, as well as a reminiscence on going to school in early Fergus Falls by A.F. Nichols.

      • These two sections of the Journal contain short histories on many towns and townships in Otter Tail County.     • This edition of the Country Press newspaper was published to celebrate its fiftieth year of publication. Included is the history of the newspaper and a paragraph on each of 31 other area publications which originated before 1899. There are also histories of Barnesville, Felton, Georgetown, Glyndon, Hawley, Hitterdal, Moorhead, Muskoda, Ulen, and Clay County. Other articles cover Moorhead's school system and colleges, including teachers such as Nina Hall. Other articles tell of Moorhead's water system, area farming, and the Post Office. Also included is an articles on the possible origins of Moorhead's pioneer log cabin.
