Construction Management Learning Opportunities

Professional development is key to our student success of achieving 100 percent job placement, often times prior to gradation. You will emerge a confident professional ready to contribute to your profession and community.

These academic offerings are required for graduation and will prepare you for a challenging and dynamic career:

This seminar will nurture your development as you progress through the CM program by promoting professional growth and career-specific education on resume writing, job interviewing and similar topics.

A 300-hour required internship gives you valuable, real-world experience and the opportunity to develop project management skills under the guidance of an experienced construction management professional. The hands-on immersion in the field reinforces a commitment to the profession and helps to narrow your career path. Many employers consider internship experience in the hiring process and often look to their own interns as the best candidates for full-time positions.

This is your opportunity to be a construction professional in training, demonstrating oral and written communication skills, problem solving, teamwork, good ethical practices, leadership and management skills. You and your team will develop a project from conception to completion—design, estimate, schedule, contract and administer the completion of a small commercial or light commercial project.

These professional development opportunities will promote your career growth as a highly desired CM professional:

Members of MSUM’s Construction Management Advisory Board (alumni and industry professionals) are eager to assist students in their professional growth through mentorship. Our valuable mentors include owners, project managers, presidents and estimators representing construction law, industrial construction, highway/heavy construction, specialty contractors and commercial construction.

MSUM’s solid reputation as a producer of stellar CM graduates means many regional and national construction companies recruit for interns and employees on our campus. Many construction companies that routinely hire MSUM CM graduates state they are exceptionally prepared to enter the workforce upon graduation.

Local and regional contractors, suppliers and other construction professionals host field trips to experience construction projects and to visit with construction management companies.

You will be encouraged to participate in regional and national construction management student competitions. Historically, our students perform very well in these highly competitive experiences and emerge with a clearer focus as they prepare for their careers.

The Construction Management Society is the professional student organization in the CM program that serves as the “umbrella organization” representing student chapter affiliations with the Associated General Contractors (AGC), Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC), Mechanical Contractors Association of America (MCAA), and the National Home Builders Association (NHBA). You’ll participate in meetings, field trips, guest speakers, professional association meetings, competitions and social activities.

Sigma Lambda Chi is the international construction honor society that provides local and international recognition to outstanding construction management majors for their academic accomplishments.
