Current Projects
The Comprehensive Facilities Plan is a 20-year, world-class, and globally innovative vision that “right-sizes” the campus for optimal enrollment. It provides a bold framework to transform our campus into the region’s most inspiring, collaborative, and achievement-focused environment.
Weld Hall Project
Nearly a decade after becoming “shovel-ready,” the Weld Hall renovation is more than halfway to the finish line. Construction is on track for completion in spring 2026, with the building reopening to the campus and community in fall 2026.
Originally built in 1915 and last renovated in 1969, Weld is undergoing a complete transformation. It will house the English Department, the Dean’s suite for the College of Arts & Humanities, and the university’s new Honors College. Glasrud Auditorium will be a show-stopping performance space blending historic charm with modern functionality, including the reinstallation of the original balcony.
Recent highlights:
- Framing and sheetrock are complete; taping and finishing are underway.
- Significant structural improvements include new windows, roofing, and raised walls.
- The exterior is receiving detailed tuck-pointing to restore the brick masonry.
- A new canopy will greet visitors entering from Sixth Avenue.
- A vibrant public art piece is in development.
Weld Hall will offer exceptional outreach opportunities in the heart of Moorhead, serving as a cornerstone of community and campus engagement.

Owens Hall Bathroom Renovation
A full renovation of first- and second-floor restrooms in Owens Hall is underway to address aging plumbing, ongoing maintenance issues, and ADA non-compliance. The new design replaces traditional multi-stall restrooms with nine private rooms featuring individual sinks, upgraded fixtures, and contemporary finishes, offering a more accessible, comfortable, and modern experience for all campus visitors.
Benefits of private rooms:
- Gender-neutral, accessible and safe for all users.
- Greater privacy and comfort.
- Fewer shared surfaces to reduce germ transmission.
Fire Alarm System Upgrades
Moorhead was awarded $3.2 million in state bonding funds to upgrade the outdated fire alarm system in academic buildings on campus. These essential improvements will enhance safety and reliability. Revenue-funded buildings were included in the original predesign, making simultaneous upgrades possible. Once funding is received, Facilities Management will hire a designer. A project timeline has not been established.
Human Performance Lab Expansion
The human performance lab provides practical, hands-on experience utilizing state-of-the-art exercise testing equipment for students in health and human performance programs. With enrollment and program needs growing, the lab will expand to four times its current size, accommodating 18 students, additional equipment, a meeting space, and a dedicated dressing room. The new lab is scheduled to be completed in late fall 2025.
