Freshman Scholarships

Minnesota State University Moorhead is proud to offer automatic, competitive and need-based scholarships to freshman. Automatic scholarships, based on high school GPA and ACT, are awarded at the time of admission. In addition to automatic academic scholarships awarded through the admissions process, MSUM Foundation offers scholarships gifted by alumni, businesses, friends and foundations to incoming, current, and graduate students. Many of these scholarships are available through individual departments, colleges and programs.

Newly admitted freshmen who are U.S. citizens or eligible non-citizens are awarded the highest scholarship amount based on the criteria at the time of admission. Students will be awarded until all funds are committed. Scholarship information and renewal criteria will be sent out by letter within two weeks of admittance.

Competitive Freshman Scholarships

The Academic Excellence Award is awarded to students who attain the National Merit Finalist level.  This is part of the Scholar's Apprentice program. The award is $20,000 over four years, or until you graduate, whichever comes first.   ($5,000 freshman year; renewable for $5,000).  Renewal requires MSUM cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher at the end of each spring semester. This scholarship replaces any previously awarded MSUM academic scholarships.

A Merit Finalist certificate must be submitted to the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid by June 30.

Designated for incoming freshman students who graduated from high school in Wyndmere, N.D. If there is no applicant from Wyndmere, the next preference goes to students who graduated high school from Lidgerwood, N.D., then from any school in Richland County, N.D.

Freshman students from the Lake Park, Minn. area who has financial need determined by filling out the FAFSA.

Scholarships are made possible through donations made to the MSU Moorhead Foundation by alumni and friends of the University.  These are a one year competitive scholarship and awards are made based solely on the application materials received with the application.  Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. 

Financial need is determined by the FAFSA. If you have not completed a FAFSA already, you can do so at www.fafsa.gov.  FAFSA results must be received before the scholarship application deadline date.

This scholarship is for freshmen students from Fertile, Minn. If no freshman applies, the scholarship is available to upper class students from Fertile, or to an upper class education major.

Available to students pursuing their first MSUM undergraduate degree.  Applicants must be full time students (12 or more MSUM credits) each semester at MSUM. No GPA requirement - only that the student is in good standing according to University policies.

This is the most prestigious scholarly award for new freshmen students who are U.S. citizens or eligible noncitizens who are admitted to the University and meet certain academic qualifications. It is a $40,000 award ($10,000 annually) with the opportunity to renew each year for up to four years or until you graduate, whichever comes first.

Students must have an ACT score of 30 or above and a minimum GPA of 3.8.  Must be enrolled for 12 or more MSUM credits per semester.  Preference will be given to a student from the Cass/Clay area.

*ACT/SAT score and GPA are based on the official numbers reported by the high school at the time of admission.  SAT score is sum of critical reading and math scores.

This scholarship is designated for an older than average female, preferably a Minnesota resident, who shows academic promise.

Available to students pursuing their first MSUM undergraduate degree.  Applicants must be full time students (12 or more MSUM credits) each semester at MSUM. No GPA requirement - only that the student is in good standing according to University policies.
