Percussion Studies

The Percussion Studio at MSUM gives students the unique opportunity to explore all facets of contemporary percussion performance and education within the confines of an individualized studio environment. Over the course of their studies at MSUM, each student receives private instruction in:

  • Orchestral Instruments and Technique, etc.
  • Multi-Percussion
  • 2 Mallet Marimba
  • 4 Mallet Marimba
  • Jazz Vibraphone
  • Drum set
  • Hand Drumming and Afro-Cuban Percussion
  • Trinidadian Steel drumming
  • Chamber Percussion Ensemble Literature and Performance
  • Drumline
  • Middle Eastern Frame Drumming
  • Brazilian Samba
  • West African Drumming and Dance
  • Javanese Gamelan

In addition to private lessons, students benefit from participating in a weekly studio master class session during which guest artists and/or students perform and discuss issues pertaining to percussion literature and performance. Percussionists at MSUM are encouraged to teach and perform as much as possible; many of our students are active in the public schools as private instructors and/or musicians in local bands and professional ensembles such as the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony. On campus, opportunities to explore your talents abound! Whether it be as a member of the Percussion Ensemble, Fuego Tropical Steel Band and World Percussion Ensemble, Dragon Drumline, Jazz Band, Wind Ensemble, Jazz Combos, or Commercial Music (Rock/pop) Ensembles, there’s a place for you at MSUM!
