Mathematics BA Scholarships

MSUM offers a variety of Mathematics scholarships for current and incoming students. Scholarships are listed below. Students can apply for university scholarships through the online scholarship application October 1-February 1.

Awarded to a student who is majoring in mathematics with preference given to applicants who are pursuing a Minor in Music or a members of a MSUM music ensemble (choral or instrumental). Requirements: Recipients must be a full time student during the previous academic year.

The Dr. James and Elaine Hatzenbuhler Math Scholarship is awarded to an incoming transfer student who is pursuing a mathematics major (renewable for a second year if a minimum GPA of 3.0 is maintained in mathematics courses along with satisfactory progress toward a mathematics degree). Requirements: Must have a declared Mathematics Major (this includes Math Education and Actuarial Science). Initial applicants must have completed the equivalent of Calculus I (Math 261) and Calculus II (Math 262). They must also have completed a minimum of 24 semester hours of college credit with a minimum 3.0 GPA both overall and in previous math courses that count toward a mathematics major.

The Freshman Mathematics Scholarship award is given to first-year mathematics majors (including math education, actuarial science, or math with a computational emphasis).  The scholarship is renewable for a second year if a minimum GPA of 3.0 is maintained in mathematics courses along with continued progress toward a mathematics degree.

Please provide a list of mathematics related honors you have received or mathematical activities in which you have participated.

Attach a signed letter of recommendation from one of your high school mathematics teachers.

James Wallen Scholarship in Mathematics is awarded to a junior mathematics major to support their senior year of study based on their scholarly achievement in their mathematics coursework. Requirements: Recipients must be a full time student during academic year.

The Katherine Leonard Endowed Scholarship is awarded to a student who is majoring in mathematics. Requirements: Recipients must be a full time student during the preview academic year.

Awarded to a mathematics major with freshman and sophomore standing who plans to pursue a career as a teacher of mathematics at either the K-12 level or college level. Requirements: Must have declared a mathematics major. The award will be given to a student who shows promise of becoming an excellent classroom teacher.

The Marion V. Smith Math Scholarship is awarded to a student pursuing a degree in Actuarial Science. Requirements: Must have declared Actuarial Science major.

The Mathematics Transfer Student Scholarship is awarded to an incoming transfer student who is pursuing a mathematics major (renewable for a second year if a minimum GPA of 3.0 is maintained in mathematics courses along with continued progress toward a mathematics degree).

Requirements: Must have a declared Mathematics Major (this includes Math Education and Actuarial Science) and must have a least one year of additional coursework remaining.

Attach a signed letter of recommendation from one of your college level mathematics instructors.

Attach a list of mathematics related honors you have received or mathematical activities in which you have participated.

The Rothmann Family Endowed Scholarship is awarded to an upper-class student majoring in mathematics with preference given to students who have a high G.P.A. in their mathematics coursework. Requirements: Recipients must be a full time student during the previous academic year.

Attach a copy of your current transcript or DARS (both available on eServices for MSUM students).

The Tim and Kathy Peil Mathematics Scholarship is awarded to math majors who have demonstrated a record of involvement in mathematical service and professional development activities. Requirements: Minimum GPA and activity requirements are based on the applicant’s standing in the major.

Please submit a document describing your involvement in the MSUM Mathematics Department such as: math club, service to the department, math tutoring, math contests, academic conference or meetings, presentations, or journal articles.
