Master of Social Work (MSW)
Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Master of Social Work (MSW) provides expertise beyond a generalist degree by developing advanced practice skills and knowledge that meet in-demand regional workforce needs for MSW professionals. MSUM’s program offers unique specializations not offered elsewhere in the Minnesota university system that set our candidates apart after graduation: Multicultural Clinical and Social Change & Leadership. If you have an undergraduate social work degree, you may be eligible for advanced standing which would help you graduate sooner.
Easily fit your classes in your busy schedule. The program uses distance technology (online plus) to deliver late afternoon and evening classes that meet you where you are.
Personalize your Master of Social Work program to meet your desired career goals. Explore two unique specializations developed from workforce needs: Multicultural Clinical and Social Change & Leadership, the only ones offered in the Minnesota State system.
You will experience a strong history of success in the new MSW program. For nearly 50 years, MSUM has educated social workers at the undergraduate level. The Council on Social Work Education has continually accredited MSUM's undergraduate social work degree since 1973, which is the first year they started accrediting undergraduate programs.
You and your cohort will fully engage, network and support one another throughout your program. You’ll learn from faculty who care about your success and who are readily available to advise and mentor.
Careers & Outcomes
Professionals in social work who complete their Master of Social Work find themselves working in specialty fields, such as child and family services, geriatrics, mental health and substance abuse or education. Whether you're interested in healthcare or social work policy, earning your MSW will open doors to your dream career.
A Smart Investment
It is evident that MSUM has not deviated from its roots of being a teaching college. It’s apparent that the faculty is there for you. Not for their research, not for their tenure, but for you. This stuck with me throughout my entire academic journey.

What is Advanced Standing?
If you have a Bachelor of Social Work from an accredited university, you qualify for Advanced Standing. This allows you to focus on building skills and knowledge you already have from your BSW while graduating in a shorter time frame.
