Chemistry & Biochemistry Department
The Chemistry & Biochemistry Department is on the Approved List of the American Chemical Society (ACS), a distinction earned by fewer than half of the nation’s chemistry departments. Courses are taught by dedicated professors who have doctorate degrees, with many focused on a chemistry specialization. While our professors actively conduct independent research, their primary interest and responsibility is offering excellent classroom instruction, overseeing student research and assisting students like you outside of the classroom.

Langseth Hall unites students studying biology, chemistry and physics under one roof. Our chemistry laboratories are among the best equipped in the region and are available to undergraduate students, giving you access to outstanding instruments and powerful electronic databases.
Introductory classes average 30-90 students while upper-level classes average 5-18 students, giving you the personal mentoring and hands-on experience a chemistry degree requires.
According to the American Association of Medical Colleges, no other major has the combination of large numbers and high MCAT scores than physical sciences, which typically includes chemistry majors. The MCAT score is a significant factor in acceptance into medical school.
MSUM chemistry faculty are passionate about teaching. All of the department’s professors have a doctorate in one of these areas of chemistry specialization: biochemistry, analytical, physical, organic, inorganic or education. By employing chemistry “specialists” rather than “generalists,” the character of MSUM chemistry faculty matches that of much larger universities.
You will have access to lab space solely for faculty-mentored undergraduate research, which generally involves 30 or more students annually. MSU Moorhead is a leader in engaging undergraduate students in faculty-mentored research, with some students performing research as early as their freshman year.
