Moorhead alum becomes a leader in North Dakota courts

Just ten years after graduating from Minnesota State Moorhead, Beau Cummings (Gerontology, ‘16) has built a career defined by public service, leadership, and a commitment to justice. Today, Beau serves as an assistant state’s attorney in the Cass County State’s Attorney’s Office, focusing on the prosecution of major crimes while advocating for victims and the broader community.

Over the course of his career, Beau has represented the State of North Dakota in thousands of district court cases, secured numerous jury trial convictions, and successfully argued cases before the North Dakota Supreme Court. He is licensed to practice in all North Dakota state courts and the United States District Court for the District of North Dakota, and he is pursuing licensure before the Supreme Court of the United States.

“I believe strongly that service to others is the most lasting impact anyone can have on their community,” he says.

He applies this philosophy to every aspect of his life by committing himself to mentorship and civic engagement. He volunteers as a judge for the University of North Dakota School of Law’s Carrigan Cup and Moot Court competitions, serves as a staff counselor for American Legion Boys State, and serves as the president of the Lake Region Bar Association. These experiences keep Beau active in the legal community while fostering collaboration between current and aspiring lawyers.

The dedication he has for his community and practice has led him to be recognized as an MSUM Foundation 10 Under 10 Award recipient, an award that recognizes alumni who have made significant contributions to their career within 10 years after graduation.
