Local elementary educator honored with Nibbe Innovation Award

For over twenty years, elementary education alum Lindsay Perlenfein has made a lasting impact on young learners through innovative teaching practices, thoughtful integration of technology, and meaningful partnerships with families. In recognition of her dedication and forward-thinking approach to education, the Nibbe School of Teaching & Learning will honor Lindsay with the Nibbe Innovation Award on Monday, April 27.

The Nibbe Innovation Award celebrates outstanding educators who are advancing new ideas and approaches to education. Recipients of this award exemplify creativity and a commitment to improving educational experience through innovative teaching practices and new models of learning.

A second-grade teacher at Kennedy Elementary School in Fargo, Lindsay continually strives to identify and implement strategies that best support student learning and well-being. Her commitment to innovation was especially evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, when she thoughtfully adapted instruction to meet students’ needs. She facilitated whole-class and one-on-one Zoom meetings, ensuring that each student remained engaged, supported, and academically connected during a challenging time.

“I try to build a positive learning community for each and every student that steps inside my classroom,” Lindsay says. “I believe this is important because it not only sets the tone and culture in the classroom for the entire year, but often for years to come.”

Lindsay prioritizes fostering individual growth, confidence, and adaptability in her students. Through intentional social-emotional support and strong academic instruction, she creates an inclusive environment where students feel valued and motivated to learn.

The Nibbe Innovation Award is made possible through the generosity of the Nibbe Family Foundation, whose transformational gift established the Nibbe School of Teaching & Learning at Minnesota State University Moorhead. The Nibbe family’s deep commitment to education reflects their belief that innovative teaching and forward-thinking educators play a vital role in preparing future generations.

Each year, students, educators, and community members are invited to submit nominations for an educator they believe exemplifies innovation in education. Lindsay’s lasting impact on students, families, and the teaching profession makes her a truly deserving recipient of this honor.
