Welcome to the Dragon Community: Christopher Franz

Christopher Franz is  Minnesota State Moorhead’s new Associate Director of Experiential Learning and Assessment. Christopher works in  the  Career Development Center and assists faculty and staff in incorporating experiential learning for all students before graduation.

Q: What drew you to Moorhead?

A: The experience and mentorship I received as a student studying photojournalism in the COMM program was fantastic. My professors gave me opportunities to grow personally, professionally, and as a photographer.

Q. What unique experiences or skills from your past job do you bring to Moorhead?

A.  I have taught photography, design, and studio-related courses at the University of Mary for the last 10 years. Coming into this role, I am accustomed to experiential learning through the teaching methods I practiced in the past and know what students need to grow in their major.

Q: Has anything surprised you about coming back to Moorhead?

A. What has been surprising is how unbelievably familiar the campus is, with the foundation staying the same. Although the interior of some buildings has been updated, it still has a familiar feeling to it.

Q. What is one thing you are learning now?

A. Right now, I am very interested in rock climbing. I go to the Fargo Climbing gym about three times per week, but I am always finding new hobbies and interests, so if you were to ask me this question in a year, my answer would be different.

Q. What is one thing people may not know about you?

A. I enjoy photographing with large format black and white film cameras. I use an antiquated approach to photography, and with more AI-generated images, I have found myself focusing on film photography rather than digital photography.

Q. What show are you currently watching?

A. I am currently watching Antiques Roadshow. I enjoy the show for the people-watching aspects, but there is also an element of art and history  that explains what the artifacts or paintings historically represent.
