MSUM Makes it Easier to Qualify for Bigger Automatic Scholarships

Choosing a college is a big decision. Moorhead High School Senior Nathan Helgeson says MSUM had everything he was looking for—affordable and close to home. It’s the only school he applied to.

“I looked around at other schools, but MSUM is the only school I toured and seriously considered,” Nathan said.

Staying close to home was an important factor in Nathan’s decision to attend MSUM. He appreciates that he will have the support system of his parents and brothers nearby as he transitions to college.

“I’ve never moved out of the area; this is home. Attending a local college is great. It makes it easy to stay connected with everyone I care about,” he said.  

Nathan appreciates how easy the application process to MSUM was, and he is thankful for how helpful his admissions counselor was along the way.

“Within an hour of applying, Madison from the Admissions Office texted me and asked if I had any questions,” Nathan said.  “She made me feel comfortable and I appreciated the reminders she gave me about filling out my housing form and other important things.”

Receiving a scholarship from MSUM was just as easy for Nathan. MSUM offers five different freshman automatic scholarships that are awarded immediately upon acceptance. With no separate application needed, this is one of the most convenient scholarship opportunities out there. Plus, the scholarships are renewable in one of two ways: 1) a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5, or 2) a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 and participating in student life activities.  

After being admitted to MSUM, Nathan received the University Scholarship, which totals $10,000 over four years.

“I was surprised by how fast it (the university scholarship) came back. I was so excited about it I went and told my parents right away!” said Nathan.

In the fall, Nathan will be studying special education. He is looking forward to exploring all of the academic and student life opportunities MSUM offers.
