Stories that Begin Here: A Letter from President Downs
Every person who becomes part of Minnesota State Moorhead arrives with a story already in progress.
Some stories begin just down the road. Others begin thousands of miles away. They are stories of curiosity, perseverance, discovery, and possibility. They are stories shaped by family traditions, personal challenges, unexpected opportunities, and bold ambitions.
At MSUM, we call the people who share those stories Dragons.

Each day, I have the privilege of hearing from students who are pursuing careers they once only imagined, alumni whose lives were transformed by a single mentor or classroom experience, faculty who inspire curiosity and creativity, and staff members whose commitment helps every student feel a sense of belonging.
These stories remind us that a university is more than its buildings, programs, or traditions. It is a community of people who learn from one another and help write each other's next chapters.
For nearly 140 years, MSUM has been a place where remarkable stories unfold. Our graduates have become educators, entrepreneurs, artists, healthcare professionals, scientists, business leaders, and changemakers who strengthen communities across Minnesota, the region, and the world. Their accomplishments are woven into the history of our university and serve as an enduring reminder of what is possible when talent, determination, and opportunity come together.
As we look to the future, I often think about the stories we have yet to hear.
I think about the first-generation student who will discover a passion that shapes a lifelong career. I think about the future teacher who will inspire the next generation, the entrepreneur who will launch a new business, the artist who will challenge perspectives, and the researcher whose work will improve lives. I think about the friendships formed here, the mentors who make a lasting impact, and the moments of growth that define a college experience.
Those future stories depend on our willingness to invest in spaces that encourage connection, creativity, and innovation.
That is why the renovation of Weld Hall is so significant.
As one of the most historic and beloved buildings on our campus, Weld Hall has long been a place where ideas take shape and voices are heard. Its transformation honors our past while creating new opportunities for future generations of Dragons. Reimagined classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, the new Honors College, and the revitalized Glasrud Auditorium will provide students, faculty, and community members with inspiring places to learn, create, and engage.

The renewed Weld Hall will stand as a symbol of what defines MSUM: respect for our traditions, confidence in our future, and a belief that extraordinary things happen when people come together to share their stories.
As you read this issue of Moorhead Magazine, I invite you to reflect on your own journey and the experiences that connect you to this university.
What moments shaped your path? Who encouraged you along the way? What chapter are you writing now?
Most importantly: What's your story?
Thank you for staying connected, supporting our mission, and sharing the story of Minnesota State Moorhead’s greatness!
Go Dragons!
