Fargo, West Fargo Scholars initiative rewards local academic talent
Bruins make great Dragons. So do Eagles, Hawks, Mustangs, Packers, and Spartans.
Through a groundbreaking partnership with the Fargo and West Fargo public school districts, Minnesota State Moorhead launched a new scholarship program this year to reward the academic excellence found right across the Red River.
MSUM’s Fargo and West Fargo Scholars program provides a $6,000 scholarship to Fargo, West Fargo, and Horace public high school students who graduate with a 3.0 GPA or higher and enroll at Moorhead the fall semester following graduation. This award stacks on top of any other merit awards the student may receive from the university.
FPS and WFPS Scholars also benefit from waived application fees, in-state tuition rates, and reserved seats for the university’s Honors Scholarship Competition Day.
The initiative was announced at a joint news conference in January that featured Moorhead President Dr. Tim Downs, Fargo Superintendent Dr. Cory Steiner, and West Fargo Superintendent Beth Slette.
“It recognizes academic effort, expands affordable post-secondary options and helps remove barriers for continuing education, all while keeping our children here in the community,” Slette said.
Dr. Tom Reburn, Moorhead’s dean of admissions, said his office has seen tremendous interest from students in Fargo and West Fargo. “We're excited to offer this opportunity so more students can pursue their academic goals and experience everything Moorhead has to offer," he said.
The Fargo and West Fargo Scholars awards match the financial impact of the North Dakota Scholarship that many of these students could receive, but with streamlined criteria and automatic access.
