All professional careers require the ability to read analytically and write well. An English degree at MSU Moorhead cultivates the arts of reading and writing. You will explore imaginative works of literature, perform critical analysis within the literary tradition, and stimulate a love of writing that promotes professional skill. You will be challenged to read, write and think in a sophisticated and critical fashion.
With one-third of all technical writing positions vacant in this country, opportunities for professional writers is vast. This unique certificate prepares you for careers in technical communication by helping you develop clear and concise writing skills that are appropriate for your audience and market.
The English degree requires only 39 credits for graduation, fewer than many other degree programs at MSUM. This degree requirement gives you versatility to add an additional major to your studies or to creatively choose electives that meet your desired area of interest.
The excellent English Department Faculty is very accessible and supportive of our English majors as they work diligently towards their degrees.

Alumni-owned bakery leads to sweet success
MSUM alumni Morgan Laite (’17) and Maggie Thoemke (’16, ’19) met when they found themselves working at a job neither of them enjoyed. Bonding over their shared experience at MSUM, similar personalities, and the fact that they were born nine days apart, they quickly became close friends.
