Learn GIS

The Center promotes professional training and advancement of the field of geographic information science through its academic offerings, including a certificate in Geographic Information Science.

GIS coursework is infused throughout the university in curricula designed to help students think spatially in diverse academic areas, such as Business Analytics, Computer Science Information Systems, Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Economics, Graphic Communications, International Studies, Sustainability and more.

GIS Day is an annual educational opportunity for the campus and local community to learn about the countless ways GIS technology impacts people’s lives. All university colleges and hundreds of students, businesses and community partners attend the event.

Through the degree program and the Center’s activities, MSUM matches students with university departments and external organizations for internship experiences. You will find our students to be exceptionally prepared to deliver outstanding results for your business, government agency and nonprofit organization.

GIS jobs are found within nearly all industries and sectors from government and defense to business and education. The U.S.Bureau of Labor Statistics states that employment of cartographers and photogrammetrists is expected to grow 19 percent from 2016 to 2026 which is faster than the average for all occupations.

Additionally, we offer customized training and workshops on ArcGIS Online, MSUM’s ArcGIS Online Organization, Creating a Web Map, Using and Designing Collector apps, Esri Maps for Office, and Community Analyst. Contact us to arrange a training session.
