Mental Health Services
Counseling Services enhances student learning by promoting health, well-being, and personal growth through ethical, inclusive, and supportive mental health care. We empower students as independent problem-solvers, provide equitable access to services, and foster a safe, respectful environment for all members of the Minnesota State Moorhead community.
By talking one-on-one with a counselor in a safe, supportive, and confidential space, students can learn effective ways to cope with life’s challenges, manage stress, and address personal concerns. Counseling Services provides HIPAA-compliant care, and our counselors are licensed to provide services in Minnesota and North Dakota only. Students who are located outside of these states may access online mental health services, available at no cost, through Mantra Health.
The counselors are ready to help with a variety of concerns including:
- adjusting to college
- family and relationship concerns
- stress
- grief
- depression
- anxiety
- other mental health challenges
Counselors cannot provide documentation for emotional support animals.
You won’t be billed for counseling services. This support service is included in student fees.
We provide short-term counseling. If you and the counselor decide you may need more frequent care, a referral can be made to our case manager/navigator to help with finding support in the community.
If you are currently working with an off-campus therapist, Counseling Services is unable to provide ongoing counseling sessions in order to ensure the most appropriate and ethical continuity of care. However, we would be glad to meet with you for periodic check-ins and additional support as needed. Minnesota State Moorhead faculty and staff are encouraged to use the Employee Assistance Plan (EAP).
The university’s CARE Team is a resource that students, faculty and staff can contact if they have concerns over the welfare of a student. These concerns may include depression, substance abuse, thoughts of suicide, disruptive behavior in class, making violent statements or feeling threatened by a student. If you contact the Care Team, you can expect that your referral will be taken seriously and that the team will respond based on the individual needs of the student and situation. A member of the team may contact you for additional information or clarification about your referral.
Minnesota State University Moorhead’s Counseling Community Outreach Center provides free, professional and confidential counseling services that are open to the Fargo-Moorhead and MSUM campus communities. Counseling services are provided by master’s-level counselors-in-training who are supervised by professional counselors and faculty supervisors.
