The First Congregational Church of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota was organized in 1872 by the Reverend Hiram N. Gates. Gates was the minister of the Congregational Church in Connecticut when he received a commission from the American Home Missionary Society to establish Congregational churches in settlements along the newly constructed line of the Northern Pacific Railroad in northwestern Minnesota. Before leaving the East, Gates met Colonel George H. Johnston, who, as president of the New England Military and Naval Bureau of Migration, was in the process of establishing a colony at Detroit on lands purchased from the Northern Pacific Railroad Company (the name of the town that was to Detroit Lakes in 1926). Many of the original settlers of the “New England Colony” were Congregationalists, and Johnston convinced Gates to settle there.

Brady is approaching his second year with the Minnesota National Guard as a 94F Computer Detection Systems Repairer. He’s currently an IT intern at Stoneridge Software. He credits his training for expanding his knowledge in his degree, and for meeting amazing friends along the way.

Students, faculty, staff, elders, and cultural teachers, who are members of an American Indian Tribe, are free to use tobacco, sage, sweet grass, cedar, and incense to conduct individual or group traditional practices including, but not limited to Opening/Closing prayers, Smudging, Feasts, Pipe Ceremonies, Pow Wows, and Drumming/Singing.

When key or card access is to be granted to faculty, staff, students or vendor/contractors, permission must be given through the electronic form to the Department of Public Safety. Student class lists in Excel or similar format which are signed by the instructor and approved by the department chair will be accepted via email. Standard due dates shall be used for semester or yearly key requests.
