Minnesota Driver's License Information for International Students

In order to obtain a Minnesota driver’s license you must be able to verify your identity. You must provide the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) with a primary document and a secondary document.

  • Your Passport, I-94 and I-20 all are counted as one primary document.
  • Bring these documents with you! You must also provide what is considered a secondary document. A Social Security Card is considered a valid secondary document; however, if you do not have a Social Security Card, the DMV has indicated that students can submit a certified post - secondary transcript with your legal name and date of birth. Because no post-secondary transcript is going to have your birth date listed on it (due to privacy laws in Minnesota),you will be able to provide the following as a valid substitute:
    • An official transcript with your legal name showing your enrollment at Minnesota State University Moorhead along with a certified letter from International Student Services verifying your date of birth.

Process to obtain a driver's license:

  1. Order an official transcript that shows your current enrollment at MSUM. Make sure you request to include your current semester listed on the transcript.
  2. Stop by International Student and Scholar Services to obtain a certified letter that verifies your date of birth.
  3. It is recommended to pre-apply for a driver's license to save time.
