P.A.V.E. Peer Advisors for Veteran Education
Starting college after military service can feel like a big transition—but you don’t have to do it alone. P.A.V.E. links incoming military-connected students with peers already on campus, creating a built-in support system from day one.
Your peer advisor is someone who has “been there.” They understand the challenges of moving from military to academic life and can help with everything from navigating campus resources to finding community.
Through one-on-one guidance, peer advisors can:
- Offer tips for navigating college life
- Connect you with academic, social, and financial resources
- Provide encouragement and support during your transition
- Help you find your place in the Dragon community
At Moorhead, our P.A.V.E. program is about more than resources. It’s about camaraderie, belonging, and making sure every military-connected student has the tools and support to thrive—in the classroom and beyond.
Meet the P.A.V.E. Team

My name is Kiyara Turner, and I’m a senior at MSUM majoring in Project Management with a minor in Entrepreneurship, set to graduate in May 2026. My military connection is through my dad, Chad Turner, who has served 33 years in the Army National Guard and is currently the Command Sergeant Major of the 34th Infantry Division DIVARTY. As the Lead Peer Advisor at MSUM, I’m passionate about helping military-connected students succeed and feel supported. In my free time, I love studying at local coffee shops, going to the gym or for long walks, and winding down with a good movie.

My name is Mike Bedard. I’m a Senior majoring in Operations Management in Construction Technology. I’m a current United States Army Reserve member and Veteran. I became a peer advisor because I was asked, and I saw it as a chance to give back and support my fellow military-connected students. I am passionate about building success—both in construction and in community!

My name is Grace Schmidt and I’m a sophomore majoring in communication studies. In my free time, I like to bake, do photography, and read. Currently, I use military education benefits since my stepfather served in the Army National Guard for 32 years. I became a Peer Mentor to help students with challenges like the ones I faced my first year.

My name is Abigale Strandlie. I’m a post-baccalaureate student studying Speech-Language and Hearing Sciences. I joined the ND Army National Guard in 2023 as a human resource specialist. I’m connected to service through my family as well. My dad served in the active-duty army, as well as my brother currently serves in the MN Army National Guard. A few things that bring me joy are hanging out with friends, being on the lake, downhill skiing and running. I became a peer advisor because I wanted to give back to other students who are connected and dedicated to service. I’m grateful to have the opportunity to provide support, resources, and a sense of belonging to military-connected students!
