  • Synchronous – 100% online but some meetings and activities will be synchronous (take place in real-time)
  • Asynchronous – 100% of instruction is online with no in-person or synchronous meetings and no in-person proctored exams
  • Blended/Hybrid – 25-75% of instruction is online with regularly scheduled in-person meetings
  • Mostly Online – more than 75% of instruction is online with up to 2 in-person meetings and up to 4 proctored exams
  • Hybrid Flex (HyFlex)– Instruction is offered in-person with remote synchronous and/or remote asynchronous options

Be sure to check the “Notes” section for each class on eServices to find specific information regarding the listed delivery method.

Being an effective online learner means being prepared. Let’s get you started! Your first step is to download and complete the Strategies for Successful Online Learning handout. This guide will assist you in organizing information about your courses, planning class and study time, and identifying important to-do items and resources.

Student Success Tips for Online Learning

  • Read your syllabus. Twice.
Get familiar with the requirements of the course and start planning out your schedule. This is especially important for asynchronous courses, which often require you to self-pace to ensure you can successfully complete all of the course requirements.
  • Familiarize yourself with class technology
Becoming familiar with the online learning tools that will be used in your courses is an important step! Identify the tools each instructor will be using and review our How-To Guides to get started with each one right away.
  • Ask questions
Be sure to ask for clarification or discuss any course issues you may have, especially if you are new to online learning. Communicate regularly with your course instructor using email or your instructor’s preferred mode of communication (check the syllabus for this information).
  • Make space
Find a space where you can attend synchronous online classes without distractions, as well as study effectively. Create a consistent routine so you have the time set aside and items that you need to stay organized - internet connection, books, headphones, etc. Turn off other devices – cell phones, television, etc. – in order to stay focused.
  • Create a schedule
Set aside enough time for each week’s work. Plan for about 3 hours of coursework for each online credit hour per week (e.g., 9 hours per week for a 3 credit course). Creating a schedule where you plan out time for each class, breaks, and other commitments like work is an important step to keeping yourself on track.
  • Participate often
Participate with your peers and your instructor to stay connected in your course; share ideas, ask questions, offering feedback and working together are ways to maintain a supportive and active class environment. Check your course sites and email at least once per daily to keep up with course announcements and other important information.
  • Keep up!
Online learning allows is flexible but takes as much time as learning face-to-face. Get started right away in order to stay on track! If you struggle with planning your time, identifying effective study habits, or simply want assistance in adapting to online learning, contact the Academic Success Center to schedule a session with an academic coach.
