Life Science Education

  • A BS in Life Science Education will prepare you for a rewarding and challenging teaching career, where you will share your passion for life science with others. As an educator, you will facilitate student learning and understanding of living things, including biology, botany, genetics, chemistry, ecology and more. You will also shape the lives and minds of young people, prepare citizens for understanding environmental and health challenges, and inspire the next generation of future scientists. This degree prepares you for two licenses: general science in the middle school (grades 5-8) and life science in the high school (grades 9-12).

  • Benefits of an MSUM Life Science Education Degree
    Personal attention
Everyone knows you by name in the Biosciences Department. With upper-level classes averaging 20-25 students, you’ll get the individual attention you deserve as you explore the challenging and exciting world of life science. As part of the degree requirements, you will engage in a 3-credit research project with a faculty mentor.
    Engaged faculty
Knowledgeable professors who have earned their Ph.D.s teach all biology, chemistry, physics, math and geosciences classes for the Life Science Education major. Faculty members are teacher-scholars, many of whom engage in research in their fields of expertise. Science education advisors and methods instructors have K-12 classroom experience and engage in educational research activities.
    Ample field experience
You’ll spend time observing, assistant and teaching in local classrooms for more than 100 hours prior to your student teaching experience, so you’ll be exceptionally prepared to lead your own classroom.
    Learning opportunities
Between the Biosciences, Chemistry, Physics and Geoscience Departments and the School of Teaching and Learning, you’ll discover a variety of experiential learning experiences that will expand your skills. Whether you’re interested in social gathering with your peers or conducting research with your professors, the opportunities to grow are endless.
    Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program
MSU Moorhead received a NSF  Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Grant  in 2015 with the objective of increasing new STEM teachers prepared to work with diverse students in high needs schools and giving them the resources to do so successfully through innovative coursework, targeted field experiences and mentorship support.
    Learning Assistant Program
The Biosciences Department offers you the opportunity to be a Learning Assistant for courses you have already taken. It’s a competitive selection process and a privilege that not only deepens your topic knowledge but provides valuable experience communicating science to your peers.
    Learning Opportunities Beyond the Classroom

Teach and observe in local classrooms. Tutor. Attend social gatherings. Volunteer. Be a scientist. Discover your passion in and out of the classroom.
