Mexican-Americans have been migrating to the Red River Valley since the late 1920s, primarily to work on the sugar beet farms during the summer weeding and the fall harvest. Since the introduction of mechanical cultivators and harvesters in the1950s, the need for field labor has declined, but the number of migrants has continued to grow. As a result, many Mexican-Americans have begun to settle permanently in Minnesota and North Dakota towns in the Valley.

Henry Nycklemoe was born c. 1982 in the United States. During the First World War he served in the U.S. Navy. After the war Mr. Nycklemoe became a lawyer and set up practice in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, sometime in the 1920s. During the 1930s he became a local judge.

The Prairie Home Cemetery Association was founded in 1875. It used land granted for cemetery purposes by the Lake Superior and Puget Sound Company, a townsite development company of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The Riverside Cemetery Association was apparently organized in 1884. The minutes of the Prairie Home Cemetery Association’s Secretary’s Record indicate that by 1887 the association was making arrangements to use land owned by the Riverside Cemetery Association.
