J. Herbert Swenson Farm Records (S4977)

1945-1958

Biographical Sketch

J. Herbert Swenson was born on his parents’ farm in Oshkosh Township near Canby, Minnesota. After growing up on his parents’ farm, he purchased a small farm with his brother around 1920. The two brothers subsequently gave up this farm as the agricultural economy worsened in the late 1920s. In 1930, Swenson bought a second farm, a half section of land in Hammer Township. On this farm he grew oats, barley, corn and other grains. He also grew the first crops of soy beans in that part of Yellow Medicine County. Swenson semi-retired in 1949, leaving the day-to-day management of the farm to his son, Lloyd. J. Herbert Swenson passed away in 1959.
