Going to a small(ish) school

A distinguishing characteristic of MSUM is community. Walking to class, the library, Kise, residence halls or anywhere, you run into at least five people you know or at least recognize. Knowing that wherever you go, you can find a friend. With that, there are still plenty of new faces and opportunities to meet people. You’ll find that you will have similar routines as certain people. You might work out at the Wellness Center or eat dinner around the same time as certain people.

The average class size at MSUM is 17 students and the student to faculty ratio is 19:1, this means that you will have a better chance at making personal connections with professors and fellow students. The professor will know your name and genuinely care about who you are as a person, and not just as a student. Smaller class size means that students are less afraid to speak up, creating unique and open class discussions. Students here are patient, enthusiastic and very easy to talk to. Experimenting with different classes will pair you with like-minded people who have similar interests.

Creating personal connections in and out of the classroom will greatly enhance your college experience. In a small city like Moorhead, the chances are likely that the people sitting next to you will be the people you will be working with in the future. Don’t be afraid to say hi and introduce yourself. It’s great to see familiar faces, plus it opens doors for new opportunities and experiences.

If this sounds like your kind of place, then I encourage you to visit campus and experience it for yourself.
