Meet Dr. Yamaya Sosa Machado, MSUM’s new Director of Graduate Studies. She is here to oversee the graduate programs and ensure that everything with them runs smoothly.
Q: What drew you to MSUM?
A: I like that MSUM is very student centered since students are the most important thing here. I appreciate that it’s focused on transforming lives of individuals which will have an impact on the world. I love that.
Q: What is your favorite part about MSUM?
A: In the short time that I have been here, I have noticed that MSUM celebrates differences and I value that. Also, as a newcomer I have felt very welcome; I appreciate how everyone is so willing to help. Anytime I’ve had a question, everyone has been very kind and willing to guide me in the right direction.
Q: What unique experience or skill from your past job do you bring to MSUM?
A: I have experience with higher education, teaching, admissions, and facilitation. I am also bringing in a little bit of consulting experience. Along with that I have some experience with foreign policy. I am hoping all of those proficiencies help contribute to the big picture in this role.
Q: What is the most interesting thing you are working on right now?
A: We are working on a series of virtual events, which allows us to reach people from all over – so that is exciting! These events allow us to provide additional support to applicants that need it.
Q: What is something you are learning right now and why is it important?
A: I like to say that I am always learning, and I am never going to stop learning. I am learning about the university culture and the MSUM work environment, a crucial part of my position. Everything I am currently doing involves some learning!
