About the Joshua Hanson Service Scholarship

The Department of Sociology & Criminal Justice seeks your support to establish an endowed scholarship to honor Joshua Hanson. In 2005, Josh completed a bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice at MSUM and law enforcement skills training at Alexandria Technical College. He planned to be a law enforcement officer when his tour in Iraq was complete and hoped to work as a deputy for the Otter Tail Sheriff's Department.

Joshua Hanson died on August 30, 2006 while serving with the Minnesota National Guard in Iraq. He was completing his second tour of duty and was assigned to Company A, 2nd Combined Arms Battalion, 136th Infantry stationed in southern Iraq.

The department's goal is to raise at least $10,000 to establish a permanent endowment to fund a scholarship of at least $500 per year. Once the endowment is established, interest generated from it will be used to fund the scholarship. To honor Joshua Hanson's service and sacrifice, the scholarship will be given annually to a department major who demonstrates excellence in service to his or her community. In addition, to be eligible for the award, a student must be a declared major in Criminal Justice, Sociology, or Gerontology, enrolled at Minnesota State University Moorhead, and have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.8. Recipients' efforts and Josh's service will be recognized each year at the department's spring reception.

Your support will help us to reach our goal of establishing a permanent scholarship to honor Joshua Hanson. Directions for donating are listed below. If you have questions, please feel free to contact Dr. Humphers-Ginther at or 218.477.2042.
