Professional Management Department Learning Opportunities

  • MSUM students participate in student organizations, attend and present at regional and national conferences, compete at regional and national competitions, collaborate on faculty-mentored projects, gain hands-on experience through internships, help coordinate community service projects, and more. Many have won prestigious scholarships for academic excellence and many have won awards for their stellar work inside and outside of the classroom.

  • As a Microsoft Dynamics Academic Alliance member, MSUM offers you the opportunity to advance your knowledge in a highly regarded business solution that helps develop leads, nurture contacts, track sales, and keep customers happy. The certificate encompasses all of the best practices of CRM with the flexibility, familiarity and functionality expected from Microsoft.

Upon completion of the Microsoft Dynamics content, you can apply for a Microsoft Dynamics Student Certificate, which documents your experience with Microsoft Dynamics and gives you a competitive edge in the job market.

A Lean Certificate will enhance your knowledge and skills in methods improvement, quality issues and process leadership in areas such as manufacturing/service operations, systems analysis, project management, procurement, inventory and quality control. A Lean Certificate will prepare you for positions in procurement, logistics, quality assurance, process improvement, inventory and more.

The Lean Certificate will provide undergraduate majors (especially in Business, Management, Marketing, Computer Science and Nursing) a valuable set of knowledge and skills in manufacturing/service operations, systems analysis, project management, procurement, inventory and quality control. These competencies are increasingly desired by employers as they continue to improve their operations in the current cost-constrained, yet increasingly competitive, economic environment.

The Dale Carnegie class will help to improve your emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills. Companies recognize the competitive advantage of employees who possess strong “people management” or “soft skills,” in addition to the value you gain by learning to communicate with diplomacy, tact and confidence.

Internships are a great way for you to explore a career area and work in a professional environment while gaining valuable, real-world experience. Internships reinforce a commitment to the profession, help you select an optimal career path and elevate your professional code of conduct. You secure your own internship, so the possibilities are flexible. Your options include:

    • Current Employer – Internship objectives must match the coursework you study in the program.
    • Prospective Employer – You can apply for internship positions at any company with Operations Management opportunities.
    • First Professional Job – You may complete your internship after being hired for a professional OM position.

This is your opportunity to be a construction professional in training, demonstrating oral and written communication skills, problem solving, teamwork, good ethical practices, leadership and management skills. You and your team will develop a project from conception to completion—design, estimate, schedule, contract and administer the completion of a small commercial or light commercial project. In addition to the capstone project, you’ll assemble and submit for evaluation materials collected over a two-year period for your professional growth portfolio.

MSUM’s solid reputation as a producer of stellar CM graduates means many regional and national construction companies recruit for interns and employees on our campus. Many construction companies that routinely hire MSUM CM graduates state they are exceptionally prepared to enter the workforce upon graduation.

Local and regional contractors, suppliers and other construction professionals host field trips to experience construction projects and to visit with construction management companies.

You will be encouraged to participate in regional and national construction management student competitions. Historically, our students perform very well in these highly competitive experiences and emerge with a clearer focus as they prepare for their careers.
