A native of Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Joined the department in 1966 and retired in 1999. Specializes in philosophy of religion. Dr. Johanson was three times chairperson of the Philosophy Department. He and his wife Alice retired to Durham, North Carolina. He recently taught a course "Baseball & Philosophy" for the Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke Univeristy.

Published New Soviet Thinking (Temple University Press, 1990), Between Marx and Nietzsche (University Press of America, 1986), and articles on Marx, ethics, and problem of evil in a number of philosophical journals. Winner of the Academic Affairs Council Teaching Excellence Award, MSUM, 2003.
