NEW Leadership Development Institute accept applications from college and community women, age 18 and over, who reside in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. Each year approximately 40 community and college women are invited to participate.
We strongly encourage women from communities that are underrepresented in public leadership to apply. Each NEW Leadership™ cohort includes women from diverse ideological, socioeconomic, ethnic, racial and educational backgrounds.
Applicants do not have to be college students or involved in formal political roles.

There is no cost to participate in the institute. Participants' food, accommodations and materials for the five-day institute are paid for by the institute sponsors and other donors.
Those who choose to register for course credits pay the additional course registration expenses.
Scholarships are available for some individuals with restricted incomes to cover travel and/or childcare expenses incurred during the five-day institute.
Participants will have the option of registering for a three-credit undergraduate course in Women’s Studies, Sociology or Social Work. Those who choose to register for course credit pay course registration expenses to Minnesota State University Moorhead. The program is residential, which means you will be staying in an MSUM residence hall from Wednesday through Sunday, and attending sessions throughout each day. We will provide meals and evening snacks. After each day’s formal sessions, you will participate in group activities and one-on-one assignments in the evening. You should be prepared for a very rewarding, but intense five days!
NEW Leadership™ is a full-time residential program, and participants are required to participate in all sessions and reside on campus for the entire program.
Yes. All NEW Leadership™ participants are required to reside on campus for the entire program. The residential requirement is crucial to sustaining the program focus and helps develop strong bonds among the participants and women leaders.
NEW Leadership Northern Lights is committed to providing ongoing mentorship and support to our alumnae long after they complete their training. You will be connected through social media and events to our network of over 600 alumnae and mentors. Each year you will be eligible to apply for start-up funds to develop projects in your community. And you will receive updates about additional training opportunities and resources to continue your leadership development.
