About NEW Leadership Development Institute

  • Next Institute: May 30-June 3, 2018 at Minnesota State University Moorhead

NEW Leadership™ Northern Lights (formerly Tri-College NEW Leadership™) has held an annual NEW Leadership™ Development Institute since 2004. These intensive five-day residential institutes provide leadership training, inspiration and support for women in the upper Midwest.  We place particular emphasis on supporting women from communities that are underrepresented in public leadership. Participants gain valuable leadership experience by:

    • Attending workshops on:
      • running for office
      • public speaking
      • fundraising and grant writing
      • public policy advocacy
      • working with the traditional and new media
      • building community partnerships
    • Meeting with over 30 women leaders, including:
      • state and local elected officials
      • leaders in tribal government
      • community activists
      • nonprofit leaders
    • Residing on campus and build relationships with a diverse group of participants and women leaders, who share a commitment to shaping the public agenda and making a difference in their communities.

After each institute, participants hone their leadership skills by planning and leading community-based projects. Participants may request start-up funds to initiate their projects.
