    Vocal Jazz Ensemble, directed by Sherrine Mostin, is a small vocal jazz ensemble consisting of 12 singers that perform music from ensembles such as the New York Voices, Swingle Singers, Manhattan Transfer and The Real Group as well as learning solo jazz standard repertoire and scat singing.

    Sherrine Mostin was born and raised on a small pear and walnut farm in Kelseyville, California. In 2009 Sherrine graduated cum laude from California State University Sacramento with her Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Studies (Vocal) under the direction of Kerry Marsh and Julia Dollison. She went on to pursue her Master’s degree in Jazz Studies at CSU Long Beach under the mentorship of Christine Guter, with a full scholarship and teaching assistantship. Sherrine graduated in the spring of 2011 and then moved to Florida where she began her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of Miami. She was awarded a Graduate Teaching Assistantship and was named a Henry Mancini Fellow, and recently graduated with a degree in Studio Music and Jazz (Vocal) under the guidance of Dr. Kate Reid. She also had the opportunity to study with Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard for two years. While in Miami, Sherrine taught at several private music studios and worked as a professional freelance musician in the Miami area. Sherrine was also heavily involved in the Guitars Over Guns Organization, a non-profit outreach program that promotes music and mentoring to at-risk youth in Miami. During her time as a young professional, Sherrine has had the opportunity to work with several notable musicians including Terence Blanchard, Gloria Estefan, Fred Hersch, Jeff "Tain" Watts, Karrin Allyson, New York Voices, Brian Lynch, Dave Douglas, Shelly Berg, Kate Reid, Gary Lindsay, and many others. She recently won 2015 DownBeat Student Music Awards in the categories of: Graduate Jazz Vocal Soloist, Graduate Large Vocal Ensemble (University of Miami), Graduate Small Ensemble (UM), and as the Director of the Undergraduate Small Vocal Ensemble (UM). Alongside performing, Sherrine is a passionate composer and arranger. Several of Sherrine’s vocal jazz arrangements have been performed by the University of Miami and CSU Long Beach, as well as Fountain Valley High School, Swift Current Comprehensive High School (Saskatchewan, Canada), and El Camino College. Most recently, Sherrine’s composition, “Heartspeak,” will be performed by the Sacramento State big band this fall. Currently, Sherrine works as a full-time faculty member at Minnesota State University Moorhead.
