Your marketability and employability are greatly improved if you choose to do a double major in another area of education. When you pair TESL with another education major, in particular elementary education, secondary communication arts and literature, secondary social studies, secondary science, secondary mathematics or K-12 Spanish, you will find yourself highly employable in districts of any size. These recommended areas will allow you to take positions in states like North Dakota, where ESL is an endorsement only and must be attached to a license in another subject area.
Nearly all of our TESL graduates go on to become teachers at public and private schools across the region and the country, while a few have made their way to other countries. Eventually, most pursue graduate degrees as well. MSUM offers four education-related master’s degrees, one doctorate in education, and numerous emphases, certificates and licensures that can increase your employment marketability and advance your career. High demand countries seeking ESL teachers include countries in the Middle East, China, Japan and Korea.
