Larry Shellito returns to veteran’s center named in his honor

Commissioner of Minnesota Veterans Affairs and MSUM alum, Larry Shellito, met with President Edna Szymanski Monday, April 29, when he returned to the MSUM Veteran’s Resource Center, which is named in his honor.

“I wanted to make a point of visiting with President Szymanski in person to thank her for the support she’s given veterans during her tenure,” Shellito said.

His last visit to the Veteran’s Resource Center was for the dedication and ribbon cutting in November 2011.

Shellito served in the Minnesota National Guard for more than 37 years, and in January 2011, was appointed the 17th Commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs. He assists the state’s 380,000 veterans and their families.

He was instrumental in establishing the state’s “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon” program, which is now the foundation of a national program to reintegrate National Guard and Reserve military service members following deployment. MSUM is recognized as a Yellow Ribbon campus.

Shellito earned his B.A. degree in business administration and accounting and B.S. in distributive education from MSUM, as well as his master’s in business education in 1979. He received the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001, and was the commencement speaker in 2011.
Shellito spent 31 years at Alexandria Technical College where he started as an instructor and advanced through a variety of administrative positions with his last nine years of service as the college’s president.
