Roland Dille’s passing is like the loss of one of the few old trees we still have on the MSUM campus, the trees planted in the late 1880s by President Livingston Lord and the first faculty of the school. One of the old trees still stands between the Library and Ballard Hall, and Roland could see it from the window of his 4thfloor emeritus office. That tree, he liked to say, “reflects the deep roots this school has in Moorhead, and Minnesota and the pursuit of learning.” He took comfort from those still-standing trees, just as many of the students and faculty and staff who knew him well also took comfort in knowing that, even after 31 years at Moorhead State, as teacher, dean and president, he was still here.
