You’ll have the chance to immerse yourself in the Fargo-Moorhead community in nearly one-third of your Communication Studies courses. These service learning projects are customized to coincide with your passions and allow you to apply the knowledge and skills learned in class to help design, plan, market, implement and assess your unique project. In the process, you’ll develop a professional network and build your resume, as well as gain a broader understanding of issues in the community.
Communicators in Action (CIA) is a student organization open to all fields of study. The organization focuses on enhancing communication skills through social and educational functions relevant to you. CIA often visits local businesses and hosts alumni to hear their communication stories.

Though not required to complete your Communication Studies degree, you can receive credit for completing an internship. Internships are an increasingly important aspect of landing your dream job following graduation. Your professors will help connect you with community organizations looking for students like you, will help you refine your resume and write impressive letters of recommendation. If you’re not looking for a long-term internship, job-shadowing opportunities are also available.
The Marcil Center for Innovative Journalism, housed in the School of Communication and Journalism, gives students the opportunity for scholarships, apprenticeships and enrichment programs, including conferences and professional collaboration.
