    Petro Serve USA, the DBA of Farmers Union Oil Cooperative of Moorhead MN, is the region’s largest supplier of home heating, commercial and agricultural fuel, propane and lubricating oils. It operates 23 Convenience Stores and it hauls its own petroleum products. It’s both a Tesoro and Cenex branded Jobber and it currently sells petroleum only to the stores that PS-USA operates.

    Project / Problem Definition:

    Petroleum is 82% of PS-USA’s total sales. It is a very competitive business where pennies make the difference. Prices are advertised on street signs for all to see and compare. Everything PS-USA does must be about efficiency or specifically driving down Net Operating Cost. We define NOC as the cents per gallon needed to break even at a C-Store.

    The primary focus of owning semis and fuel trailers is to lower NOC. Prices change at 6:00pm. Buying primarily in daily up markets before price increases at 6pm has been critical to survival in Fargo gas wars.

    PS-USA would like MSUM Dragon Consulting to develop implementable action plans which will increase profitability by 3% in the Transportation department.

    Project / Problem Definition:

    JTJ is in an industry where finding and retaining highly qualified field staff is difficult. Competition for seasoned employees is high, and North Dakota is among the toughest environments. Employees are often on construction sites away from home during the week, returning home on weekends. Long hours are often required. Project management and supervision skills require years to develop. Compensation alone is not the answer to attracting and retaining skilled workers. While willing to invest in staff, it is critical that turnover be reduced. It is JTJ’s objective to be the “Employer of Choice”, where experienced workers deliberately seek out opportunities to be part of the John T. Jones Team.
