MSU Moorhead’s Langseth Hall unites students studying biology, chemistry and physics under one roof. And unlike many institutions, which reserve their best instruments only for graduate students, MSU Moorhead provides all students with access to outstanding instruments and powerful electronic databases for chemical literature research.

The department also provides dedicated lab space solely for faculty-mentored undergraduate research, which generally involves 30 or more students annually. MSU Moorhead is a leader in engaging undergraduate students in faculty-mentored research, with some students performing research as early as their freshman year. Many students conduct research for multiple semesters and with multiple professors.

Below are some of the innovative tools and techniques used by MSUM Chemistry students:

400-MHz nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectrometer
The new NMR has advanced robotics with auto-sampling and provides remote network-based access to students and faculty from any computer on or off campus. NMR is probably the single most powerful instrument used for identifying the structure of molecular compounds. NMR has found key uses in chemical research, biochemistry, pharmaceutical chemistry, polymer science, petroleum research, agricultural chemistry and medicine.

    Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS)
GC-MS make an effective combination for chemical analysis. Among its uses are drug detection, environmental analysis and fire and explosives investigation. GC analysis separates all of the components in a sample and definitively identifies the component of a mixture through a representative spectral output.

    FT-IR Spectrometer
Infrared (IR) spectroscopy is one of the most common spectroscopic techniques used by organic and inorganic chemists. Simply, it is the absorption measurement of different IR frequencies by a sample positioned in the path of an IR beam. In combination with other experimental techniques, it unequivocally identifies certain types of chemical bonds in a compound.

    UV-VIS Spectrometer
UV-VIS spectroscopy is a highly flexible technique used in nearly every laboratory as a fast, non-interfering way to analyze the contents of a multicomponent sample.

    FPLC/HPLC Automated Chromatography
Fast protein liquid chromatography (FPLC) is used to separate or purify proteins and other polymers from complex mixtures. FPLC is a complete system for laboratory scale chromatographic separations of proteins and other biomolecules. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) can separate a mixture of compounds and is used in biochemistry and analytical chemistry to identify, quantify and purify the individual components of a mixture.
