BS in Nursing Admission & Application Requirements

    1. Admission to MSUM
      The details for applying and admission to MSUM are identified on the How to Apply page. Once you are admitted declare the BS in Nursing as your major.
    2. Complete Prerequisite Courses
      There are eight courses that must be completed.
      • The four Semester One prerequisites are used to evaluate for admission and must be completed or in process prior to the application deadline. All courses must be completed with a C or better in each course and a cumulative 2.75 GPA across the Semester One prerequisites.
        • ENGL 101 English Composition or equivalent
        • PSY 113 General Psychology or equivalent
        • Goal Area 3 General CHEM course or equivalent (offered at MSUM Fall & Spring semester)
        • Any Goal Area General Education Course
      • The four Semester Two prerequisites are not used to evaluate for admission. If offered admission, all prerequisites must be completed before starting the BS in Nursing cohort courses, with a C or better in each course and a cumulative 2.75 GPA across the Semester One and Two prerequisites. If any prerequisite is not completed, or does not meet the criteria, the offer of admission will be revoked.
        • BIOL 125/125L Human Anatomy & Physiology I (with lab) or equivalent (offered at MSUM Summer & Spring semesters; starting Summer 2020 semester)
        • BIOL 126/126L Human Anatomy & Physiology II (with lab) or equivalent (offered at MSUM Summer & Spring semesters; starting Summer 2020 semester)
        • PSY 202 Developmental Psychology or equivalent
        • COMM 285 Intercultural Communication or equivalent
      • PLEASE NOTE: It is RECOMMENDED, but NOT required to take the additional course BIOL 236/236L Introduction to Microbiology, BEFORE starting the nursing program, as it will ONLY be offered at MSUM in Summer & Spring semesters. It is a required course of the nursing program so, please plan accordingly based on semester offerings.
    3. Apply to the BS in Nursing Program

    Admission is limited and competitive, only 32 students will be accepted per semester start. It is advised that all applicants also consider a parallel plan.

    If you are a Licensed Practical Nurse, you must maintain an unencumbered practical nursing license from any state in the U.S. throughout the program.

    Applicants will be notified by July 1.

    Upon admission to the BS in Nursing program, new students will receive information about required documentation of immunizations and other screenings, CPR, background checks, etc., prior to program start.

  • *The proposed MSU Moorhead BS in Nursing program is a member of the Minnesota Alliance for Nursing Education (MANE) where we adhere to common admission criteria. For Fall 2020 nursing program start, consideration for admission to the MSU Moorhead MANE BS in Nursing program is based on TEAS and GPA. Previously it was planned for all applicants to submit a personal statement with their application. However, due to changes in the anticipated MANE holistic admissions timeline, the personal statement will not be required for the Fall 2020 application term. However, admission criteria will change for upcoming application terms starting 2021. The revised criteria for Summer 2021 and Fall 2021 application and admission will be posted to our webpage as soon as details have been finalized.
