Students enrolled in the Athletic Training Program (ATP) receive clinical experiences through practicums and internships infused into regular coursework. Hands-on practical experience is gained by working with student-athletes and patients at a variety of Athletic Training Clinical Education Sites. You will spend one to eight weeks at a site and will be evaluated on clinical skills by an Athletic Training Preceptor.
Approximately 30 Preceptors are involved in the clinical education portion of the program. The Preceptor is a medical professional (Certified Athletic Trainer, Medical Doctor, or Doctor of Chiropractic) who has completed a training program through the MSUM ATP and is familiar with the education of the Athletic Training Student. Occasionally, an Athletic Training student completes an internship outside of the opportunities provided through MSUM coursework; these include, but are not limited to professional sport teams, specialty camps, or a unique clinical site.
