Art History Scholarships

  • MSUM School of Art offers a variety of Art scholarships for current and incoming students. Scholarships are listed below. Students can also apply for general university scholarships through the Office of Scholarship and Financial Aid.

    Eligibility for all scholarships:

    • Applicant must continue to be enrolled full time (12 credits per semester) in Art courses, and follow the program requirements of their area of emphasis as a major in the department for the 2018-19 academic year.
    • Applicants may apply for any of the scholarships for which they meet the application criteria, however, successful applicants will only be awarded one School of Art Scholarship per academic year.
        
  • Freshman talent scholarships can be awarded to incoming freshmen. Application form is available to high school seniors planning to enroll at Minnesota State University Moorhead. The deadline is February 28th.

    Applications for Upperclassmen: needs to be submitted to the School of Art Office (CA 161) on March 14th and March 15th between 10 am - 2 pm.

    Application Criteria:

    • Applicant must be an MSUM School of Art major and have at least one year (two semesters) remaining at MSUM
    • Applicant must demonstrate strong abilities in their chosen area of emphasis
    • Applicant must have at least a 3.0 GPA in MSUM School of Art coursework and a 2.75 GPA overall in MSUM coursework
    • This is an upper level scholarship and an application can be submitted as early as the Spring Semester of the sophomore year of study
    • Applicant must have completed at least one introductory art course and be currently enrolled in or have finished at least one art studio class at the 303 level or above
    • Current recipients of the scholarship must reapply each year if they wish to receive continued support
    • A student may receive no more than three years of awards from this scholarship
    • Award winners will be chosen based on quality of work and application requirements
    • Award winners will be notified by late April
    • Applicant must be enrolled full-time (12 credits per semester) or if you are in the certificate program a minimum of 8 credits per semester
        

    Application must include:

    • Complete the School of Art Scholarship application form
    • A current MSUM transcript: stapled with GPA’s and 300 level classes highlighted
    • A letter of application, include a personal statement regarding your commitment to the study of art
    • A digital portfolio of recent work (see Excellence Scholarship Application Information PDF below)
    • An artist statement
        

    Recipients will be required to present at a School of Art colloquium event set by the colloquium coordinator:

    • Give a formal public presentation of your recent work

    Eligibility Criteria:

    • Fall Semester Sophomore, Junior, Senior, and Certificate Program class level
        

    Application Criteria:

    • Current Freshmen Art majors must be enrolled at the Sophomore level beginning fall semester
    • Current Sophomore, Junior, and Senior, Art majors must be successfully advancing to the next level in their major area of emphasis
        

    Application must include:

    • Completed School of Art Scholarship Application Form
    • Current Freshman applicants must submit 4 original works completed in their Basic Drawing and Foundation Design courses during the academic year. The quality of presentation is considered part of the evaluation criteria
    • Current Sophomore, Junior, and Senior applicants must submit 10 images in digital format (see guidelines) or Art History paper
    • Copy of current DARS (transcript)

    Application Criteria:

    • Applicant must demonstrate strong potential in the area of teaching based on professionalism and experience
    • Applicant must have declared Art Education as their major and have a 3.0 GPA overall
    • Applicant must continue to be enrolled in the School of Art following the Art Education program requirements while receiving the Scholarship
        

    Application must include:

    • Completed School of Art Scholarship Application Form
    • Applicants must submit 10 images in digital format (see guidelines)
    • A written statement describing the importance of Art Education for K-12 students
    • Copy of current DARS (transcript) relevant information highlighted

    • John Holland Art Scholarship

      Current Sophomore, Junior, and Senior Visual Arts majors who are successfully advancing to the next level in their major areas of emphasis and have original work samples for submission.
    • Mary Alexander Brumby Endowed Scholarship for Art History
 and Studio Art
      Applicant must have declared Art History as their area of emphasis and submit a paper which will be evaluated by the Art History Professors.
    • Dr. Blanche D. Schwartz Scholarship Endowment

      Applicant must demonstrate strong potential in the area of teaching based on professionalism and experience. Must have declared Art Education as their major and have a 3.0 GPA overall, and must continue to be involved in the School of Art following the Art Education program requirements while receiving the scholarship. The application includes a written statement describing the importance of Art Education for K-12 students and ten images in digital format.
    • Sharon R. Mendola Memorial Endowed Scholarship – Art Department

      This scholarship is for students at the Junior or Senior class level seeking a B.A. or B.F.A. in painting, drawing or graphic design. Financial need and good academic standing will be taken into consideration.
    • Carol and Hugo Moeckel Endowed Scholarship - Art Department
      This scholarship is for students at the Junior or Senior class level who demonstrate strong abilities in their chosen area of emphasis in the School of Art. Current Sophomore, Junior and Senior applicants must submit 10 images in digital format or submit an Art History paper.
    • Ellen Diederich

      Painting Major, Junior or above, 3.0 GPA This scholarship is for Junior and Senior class level students with a 3.0 GPA in art courses. It is available for applicants who are painting majors.
    • David A Wallace Memorial Endowed Art Scholarship

      Students at the Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Certificate class level are eligible for this scholarship, specifically for Art majors with an emphasis in Ceramics.
    • Richard Gompf Endowed Art Scholarship

      This scholarship is for students at the Sophomore, Junior, Senior and Certificate class level with a declared emphasis in ceramics or sculpture.
    • School of Art Endowed Scholarship

      Applicants must be a U.S .Citizen at a Junior or Senior class level. An overall GPA of 3.0 is required.
    • Timothy Ray Memorial Scholarship
      Applicants must be Junior or Senior by Fall semester.
