Q: What does SOAR stand for?
A: SOAR is an acronym for all the fundamental parts that make up this Introduction Phase of your transitional journey – Orientation, Advising and Registration.

Orientation

Step 1: Complete the online orientation.

Q: How will I receive the link to online orientation?
A: When you signed up for SOAR, you should have received a confirmation email with a link to online orientation.

Q: What if I lost the email or never got it?
A: No problem. The link can be found on our SOAR webpage.

Q: Do I have to complete the online orientation?
A: Yes. The online orientation will greatly enhance your understanding of what you need to know about being a student at MSUM including the steps necessary to make a seamless transition into the university.

Advising and Registration

Step 2: Complete a pre-enrollment survey

Q: How will I receive the survey?
A: Once you have signed up for SOAR, you should have received an email Pre-Enrollment (Pre-Registration) survey

Q: What if I lost the email or never got it?
A: First, check you junk mail. If you don’t find it in your junk mail, please contact you admissions representative.

Q: Do I have to complete the survey?
A: Yes! Your survey answers will be utilized by an advisor to enroll you in your fall semester courses based on the information gathered through the survey.

Q: What is the survey used for?
A: The survey will be utilized by an advisor to build a schedule based off the questions you answered.

Q: How will I get registered for classes and how will an advisor know what classes I should take?
A: An advisor will put together a schedule for you based off of the information you provide in the Pre-Enrollment survey which includes your major, areas of interests, special accommodations needed, college level course work previously or currently taking, and anything else you wish for the advisor to know.

Q: What if I change my major after I fill out the survey?
A: Please contact you admissions representative and they will update this information for you!

Q: Who will put my schedule together for me?
A: An advisor in your area of study will utilize the information you’ve provided to us through the Pre-Enrollment survey as well as other information we have gathered on you throughout your application process.

Q: Will I be registered for classes that I don’t need to take?
A: No! An advisor will register you for the following courses:

  • Major requirements
    • approximately 2 to 3 courses (6 to 9 credits) required for your degree of study.
  • Graduation requirements
    • Liberal Arts & Sciences Curriculum (LASC)
      • Approximately 2 to 3 courses (6 to 9 credits) will begin to fulfill the LASC general education graduation requirement which consists of a minimum of 14 classes (42 credits) of course work.
    • First Year Experience Course (FYE)
      • FYE is a 1 credit course that is required of all students entering MSUM with less than 24 credits and highly recommended for all new students. The course focuses on academic success skills and university navigation.

Q: Do I need my official transcripts sent to MSUM before SOAR?
A: We strongly recommend having your official transcript sent to MSUM before your SOAR date so the academic advisor will have the most complete picture of your academic record.

Step 3: Attend your 30min live Zoom session on your SOAR day?

Q: What will I be doing on my SOAR day and is there anything for my parents or family members?
A: You will meet an advisor via zoom for a 30-minute time slot between the hours of 1:00 pm and 4:00 pm. Your exact 30 minute time frame will sent to you via email closer to your SOAR date. You will not need to be present for the whole 4 hours.

Q: What will happen in the Advisor meeting?
A: The advisor will go over your schedule with you, answer any of your questions, make any needed changes to your schedule, and let you know who to contact in the event that you want to make changes anytime during the summer.

Q: What if I want to change my whole schedule?
A: The advisor can help you make those changes at your Advisor meeting.

Q: Will SOAR be held in person, or virtually?
A: All SOAR Sessions and Meeting with you advisor will be held virtually.

Q: Are there other things happening on my SOAR Day?
A: Yes.

  • If you are a GRIT student, you are invited to attend the virtual GRIT Session from 11:00 am-12:00 pm.
  • If you are a parent or guardian, you are invited to attend the virtual Family Session from 12:00-1:00 pm.

Step 4: Meet your Dragon Mentor and your first-year teammates

Q: What is a Dragon Mentor?
A: A Dragon Mentor is an upperclassman that will serve as your student mentor throughout your transition to MSUM. They will be your group leader during Welcome Week, in your First Year Experience (FYE) course, and in your residence hall Learning Community if you have decided to participate in an LC.

Q: How will I know who my Dragon Mentor is and when will I meet them?
A: Virtually in July. Your Dragon Mentor will reach out to you at the beginning of July with a date and time to connect virtually to say hi and to help you get to know your first-year teammates before you even get to campus! And, in person August 19, 2021 at Move-in day which marks the beginning of Welcome Week activities that will last throughout the weekend and into the first week of classes!

Q: Who are my first-year teammates?
A: Your teammates are your First Year Experience* (FYE) classmates! They are also the members of your Learning Community (LC) if you have chosen to participate in an LC.
