Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarships are available for current undergraduate students are eligible for up to three years of support in the form of a competitive scholarship that will be $14,308 in 2021-2022.

What is the difference between a scholarship and a stipend?
- Scholarships: Current undergraduate students are eligible for up to three years of support in the form of a competitive scholarship that will be $12,711 in 2016, and will be adjusted slightly to match any tuition increases over the next five years.
- Stipends: Returning students who already have obtained a baccalaureate degree in math or science and are currently pursuing a science or math teaching license are eligible for up to one year of support in the form of a competitive stipend that will be $12,711 in 2016, and will be adjusted slightly to match any tuition increases over the next five years.

Scholarship and stipends will be $12,711 in 2016, and will be adjusted slightly to match any tuition increases over the next five years.
How many scholarships/stipends will be awarded?
We have funding with a grant from the National Science Foundation to award around 50 scholarship/stipends spread out over five years. Given that the grant period begins December 1st, 2015, there will be approximately 5 awards to be allocated among math and science majors and post‐grads returning to obtain a teaching license awarded for the Spring 2016 semester. A new round of applications will be announced in the spring of 2016 for awards to made for the 2016‐ 2017 academic year.
When is the application due?
Applications must be submitted electronically, and your two supporting documents must be emailed by Monday, April 18th 2016.
What are the qualifying criteria?
- Must be U.S. citizen, or an eligible non‐citizen (i.e. national or permanent resident alien).
- Must be currently registered as a student at MSUM.
- Must be in good academic standing 2.5+ GPA
- Must have completed at least four semesters of coursework towards a science or math major by the upcoming semester (Junior or higher standing in the major)
- Must have completed Introduction to Teaching (Ed 205) or an equivalent experience.
- Must have experience working with adolescents (this could include practicum experiences, coaching, mentoring, tutoring, summer camp counselor, etc.).
- Must obtain both
- a science or math content major (or have already completed a science or math major), and
- a science or math education major and associated teaching license at the middle/secondary level in science or mathematics
- Must enroll in TESL 473: "Teaching Science and Math to English Language Learners".
- If awarded a scholarship, volunteer up to 150 hours each calendar year of funding in a teaching setting to be approved by a Noyce Faculty PI that may include: being a Learning Assistant, participate in outreach, organize pre‐service teacher workshops, attend STEM conferences, attend regional or national Noyce meetings, ect.
- Must maintain good academic standing (overall and major GPA at least 2.5).
- Must sign Promissory Note and other compliance forms that indicate your binding agreement with the conditions and expectations of the award, which include teaching two years in a high need school district for every year of scholarship/stipend funding; if you decide not to teach in a high needs school district then you agree to repay the scholarship award in full, plus interest. There will be a grace period of approximately a year to allow for personal situations and job searches before you must start a repayment plan. Essentially your scholarship/stipend will revert to a loan if you are not teaching in a high needs school district.
- Must agree to participate in follow up activities such as mentoring, evaluation, and professional development activities after graduation.
What is meant by “high needs” school districts? Are these hard to find?
The term high‐need local educational agency as defined in section 201 of the Higher Education Act of 1965 (20 U.S.C.1021) means a local educational agency (for example, a school district) that serves an elementary or secondary school located in an area which is characterized by at least one of the following: a high percentage of individuals from families with incomes below the poverty line; a high percentage of secondary school teachers not teaching in the content area in which they were trained to teach; or a high teacher turnover rate. These districts are not hard to find – most every district in our region fits one of the above definitions.
