Teaching English as a Foreign Language
A Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) degree from MSU Moorhead will prepare you to share the gift of English with those who are non-native speakers of the language. The BA in TEFL is geared toward individuals, such as international students, who wish to teach English as a foreign language in countries where English is not the dominant language.
TEFL is a teaching degree, but you will have opportunities to explore literature, develop your writing style, and improve your speaking abilities as part of this degree. All TEFL majors will select up to 24 credits of electives in consultation with their advisor, allowing non-native speakers to add one of the English proficiency certificates to their degree and native speakers to add studies of other languages and cultures to the degree in preparation for working in another part of the world.
Teachers of EFL open their world to work and travel possibilities just about anywhere. The BA in TEFL is the degree required for teaching abroad, making you immediately employable. Program graduates will find teaching opportunities across the globe.
Teaching ESL brings together the love of English with linguistics and education. You will study English and education courses combined with the scientific study and teaching of the English language.
You’ll get immersed into classroom experiences as soon as you begin the major. You’ll learn from faculty who have lived and taught overseas and who have real-world experience teaching non-native English speakers. You even have the option of engaging in an internship experience just before graduating.
MSUM offers both a master of arts and a graduate certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language, providing you lifelong learning opportunities when you’re ready. A master’s degree can expand your marketability to community colleges, intensive English programs and university programs.
At MSUM we’re committed to providing you the best opportunities to expand your understanding and master your teaching skills to help non-native English speakers develop their language skills.
