Graphic Communications Scholarships

MSUM offers a variety of Graphic Communications scholarships for current and incoming students. Scholarships are listed below. Students can apply for university scholarships through the online scholarship application October 1-February 1.

The School of Media Arts & Design has a generous scholarship program. A cumulative GPA of 3.0 and outstanding achievement in academics, artistic/creative activities, or department service are required to be eligible for the scholarships to Animation, Film Production, Film Studies, Graphic Communications and Graphic Design.

Freshman Scholarship

Eligibility

  1. You will declare a major in the School of Media Arts & Design (Animation, Film Production, Film Studies, Graphic Communications and Graphic Design). You will actively participate in departmental co-curricular activities.

Department Scholarships

Eligibility

  1. You must be enrolled in the School of Media Arts & Design
  2. You must have a GPA of 3.0 or above.
  3. You should be involved in department activities

The Carol Gaede Scholarship Award was established to honor Dr. Carol Gaede for her long-standing commitment to excellence and learning in the disciplines of Communication Studies, Film Studies, and Theatre Arts. The scholarship is a financial award that honors academic, artistic/creative, and/or service achievement in a student who is a declared major in communication studies, film or theatre arts.

Requirements: Less than 64 credits, 3.0 GPA, creativity and service to community.

The Colleen Moore Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding female Film Studies student to assist in the creation of film/video work or to assist with costs of attending a conference.  Scholarship amounts vary based on need.  Eligible students must be a full-time Speech Communications major in the area of Film and Telecommunication Arts.

Must be enrolled in the School of Media Arts & Design with a GPA of 3.0 or above and should be involved in department activities

The Delmar J. Hansen Scholarships are made possible by donations to the Delmar J. Hansen endowment fund by faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the department. This scholarship recognizes outstanding academic achievement as well as contributions to the departments and community through leadership and active participation in events and organizations.

Eligibility:

  1. Be declared majors in communication studies, film production, film studies or theatre arts;
  2. Have a cumulate GPA of 3.0 or higher, and GPA of 3.25 or higher in major and liberal arts;
  3. 90+ credits;
  4. Have made outstanding contributions on a regular basis to department and/or major-sponsored programs and activities;
  5. Have participated in other university and/or community activities.

 Eligibility:

  1. Applicant must be an MSUM School of Media Arts and Design major and have at least one year (two semesters) remaining at MSUM.
  2. Applicant must demonstrate strong abilities in their chosen area of emphasis.
  3. Applicant must have at least a 3.0 GPA in MSUM School of Media Arts and Design course work and a 2.75 GPA overall in MSUM course work.
  4. This is an upper level scholarship and an application can be submitted as early as the Spring Semester of the sophomore year of study.
  5. Applicant must have completed at least one introductory art course and be currently enrolled in or have finished at least one art studio class at the 303 level or above.
  6. Current recipients of the scholarship must reapply each year if they wish to receive continued support.
  7. A student may receive no more than three years of awards from this scholarship.
  8. Award winners will be chosen based on quality of work and application requirements.
  9. Award winners will be notified by late April.
  10. Applicant must be enrolled full time (12 credits per semester), or, if you are in the certificate program, a minimum of 8 credits per semester.

Art & Design Scholarship are available for students majoring in any of the Media Art and Design disciplines who are in good academic standing.

Incoming freshman who will declare a major in the School of Media Arts & Design (Animation, Film Production, Film Studies, Graphic Communications and Graphic Design).  You will actively participate in departmental co-curricular activities.

Attach two signed letters of recommendation from your teacher/director or another individual qualified to speak of your strengths in the Media Arts and Design programs.

North Dakota and Minnesota residents pursuing a BA or BFA degree in Art with an emphasis in Graphic Design are eligible for this award. Applicants must also be a member of the LGBTQ Identifying Students and Allies. 

This scholarship is awarded to Graphic Design majors that are actively involved in the student organization SPECTRUM and work to improve school climate for all students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.

Applicant must be enrolled in the School of Media Arts & Design, have a GPA of 3.0 or above and should be involved in department activities.

When Tim Larsen started his one-person studio in 1975, he did not entirely know what he was getting into, but he was clear about what he wanted to accomplish.  This firm has evolved well beyond the young designer's imagining but never astray from its founding principles.

Larsen has been a consistent advocate for design education - both to produce skilled, well-rounded designers and to increase the public's understanding of how good design contributes to commerce, learning, and quality of life.

The recipient shall be a student in good standing whose major is graphic design, interactive media, or a closely related field.

This scholarship for juniors or seniors in good academic standing shall be awarded to a major who is studying theatre or film on the basis of the following:

  • General artistic creativity
  • Acting ability
  • Desire to be a performer
  • Number of student theatre, film, and/or television performances, with quality of performance more important than level of the role
  • Commitment to becoming a stage or film actor
  • Indication of potential to become a director in any of the four named media
  • Commitment to and support of the MSUM theatre/film programs and to the other students majoring in the programs
