  • A First Year Experience (FYE) Course is designed for incoming students to ease the transition from high school to a college or university setting. During this course, students learn to set goals, stay motivated, develop good study habits, time management skills, balance responsibilities, build connections, and create an academic pathway to your chosen career.

SOC's are student leaders who help First Year students during their transition to the college or university. SOC's will be assigned to a specific section of the First Year Experience class and put on workshops throughout the semester, specifically geared toward enhancing the first year students overall experience.

FYE empowers students to make a successful academic and social transition to college life and connects them to the MSUM community.

    We accomplish our mission by:

    • Introducing and engaging first year students with MSUM resources, policies, procedures, information and services designed to promote college completion and student goal attainment.
    • Connecting new students with learning opportunities, both inside and outside the classroom that promote holistic student development.
    • Empowering new students for academic success and to be self-sufficient lifelong learners.

    Course Objectives/Student Learning Outcomes

    • Students will develop awareness of their physical, emotional, and mental health.
    • Students will identify and utilize support networks and mentors, including their professors.
    • Students will learn how to identify their academic strengths and areas of improvement.
