On Friday October 27, 2006
the Xi Kappa Chapter-At-Large was honored to welcome Dr. Dan Pesut
as the keynote speaker at the annual induction of Sigma Theta Tau
members for the year 2006. Dr Pesut exemplifies all that STTI
honors: an excellence in nursing practice, education, and research.
He served as a staff nurse in the U.S. Army and worked as a clinical
nurse specialist at the U.S. Army Institute of Surgical Research.
Dr. Pesut is also past-president of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor
Society. Pesut, who is experienced in nursing
practice, education, administration, and research, is a
past-president of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society. His keynote
address, “The Vision Factor” was very encouraging and promoted
the nursing profession respectfully.

from some of those who attended: "It was
inspiring to induct the new nurses excited to enter the
workforce while at the same time honoring nurses who had been
practicing anywhere from 5-20 years at the ceremony.
I had a particularly nice chat with one dynamic senior
nursing student. Dr. Pesut gave a discussion on vision and how it is
achieved. This student had all the components to her vision that Dr.
Pesut talked about. She expressed interest in a workplace with a
positive vibe to it. A challenging practice that would allow her to
be a part of the team and a facility that allowed her flexibility
and new opportunities. She was interested in a practice that would
fit her personal and professional vision. I was personally delighted
to have this young woman enter the field of nursing and our
professional organization. I left the induction feeling re-energized
and ready to use my nursing knowledge to make a positive
contribution to my home, my workplace and my community"
(SS).
"It was a pleasure to meet a
nurse leader of the caliber of Dr. Dan Pesut. I enjoyed hearing
his interpretation of the evolution of nursing from a historical to
a futuristic perspective. At our annual induction ceremony, we announce the inductees and their career
aspirations. Generally, their announced focus is on a type of
nursing or place of employment. My greatest curiosity, however,
about our elite inductees is "How will you change the future of
nursing?" I know they will have long and diverse careers, and
have a powerful impact on our profession. Their new membership in
Sigma Theta Tau is the first step in accessing the many benefits that will enhance
their leadership abilities to effect these changes. I congratulate
our inductees on making a wise decision to accept our invitation to
join Sigma Theta Tau" (BG)!
Dr. Dan Pesut, immediate past
president of the International Honor Society spoke about "The
Vision Factor" at the induction ceremony. He challenged nurses
to play a role in a transformed health care system by transcending
the present, anticipating the future, and creating vision-based scenarios that show how resources are aligned with
action to achieve well defined outcomes. He quoted Bert Nanus,
saying, "Vision is composed of one part foresight, one part
insight, plenty of imagination and judgment, and often a healthy
does of chutzpah" (MM).
Thank you
to each one of our board members for their part in arranging a
memorable and inspiring event. Top of Page

Jamestown
College, by Jacqueline Mangnall: In
February, 6 senior nursing students and one JC faculty member traveled
to Chogoria, Kenya to work in the hospital for three weeks. The hospital
and its associated nursing school is located in a lush jungle region
just at the base of Mount Kenya. The area is remote but the
Presbyterian Church of Kenya and the USA support a 300-bed hospital that
serves a population of 528,000 people. While in Chogoria, the
students were assigned to a pediatric ward and cared for children with
malaria. They also worked on a maternity ward and traveled with
nurses to remote jungle areas to deliver AIDS medication and teaching.
They completed their experience in Kenya by going on a safari at
the Masaai Mara. As part of the partnership between Jamestown
College and Chogoria, the college will also be offering scholarships and
expenses for two students from their nursing school to obtain their
baccalaureate degree at Jamestown College.
>
> The Department of Nursing at JC is in the process of expanding its
program to admit 48 students per class (previously, we admitted a
maximum of 36 students). The college is discussing affiliation
possibilities with several rural health-care facilities in the area and
we have restructured some of the curriculum to accommodate a larger
number of students. Of particular concern is pediatric clinical
experiences. We are planning to increase our involvement in the
school system with the hope that more of a nursing presence there will
be beneficial to both our nursing school and the public schools.

Membership

Sigma Theta Tau International comes with several
benefits, but it can also be costly. From time to time, a
qualified student candidate for membership in Xi Kappa is
unable to pay the membership fee. When this has happened in the
past, members have stepped forward to offer assistance with paying
the fee.
The chapter has subsidized 75 percent of the membership fee
which is $120. If you would like to make a donation to this fund
please email Marjorie
or call 701-231-7517. Thank you.

Recruit & Endorse a Community Member:
We have many qualified nursing leaders across the region and Xi-Kappa
welcomes nurse leaders who have earned a baccalaureate degree to
become members in the society. Active members are invited to consider
endorsing a nurse for membership. It is not too soon to start
the process even though the official induction takes place in the
fall. The forms are linked below.
