Avian Influenza Presentation, January 19, 2006 by Jami Petry

Avian Influenza: The “Bird Flu”!

Sigma Theta Tau, International Honor Society, Xi Kappa Chapter, in a joint effort with the North Dakota Nurses Association District IV, recently hosted Dr. John R. Baird, the North Dakota Health Officer, on January 19th, 2006.

Nearly 60 people attended this insightful presentation on the Avian Influenza situation and its impact on public health as a whole. Baird spoke briefly on the background of influenza and how the Avian strain came into mainstream. Baird spoke in depth on the specifics of Avian Influenza and its potential impact on health care. Dr. Baird finalized his talk with encouragement to nurses as a whole to consider, not only the global and national effects of Avian Influenza, but also the local and individual impact.

He encouraged nurses to get involved early in the preparedness for the possible pandemic.Additional information may be found at the following websites:

Chapter Members Enjoy Education Benefits

Membership in Xi Kappa Chapter comes with several benefits. One of these is educational activities. Recently Xi Kappa Chapter has sponsored several educational events on clinical and other topics. At one recent event (a dramatic presentation about end-of-life issues), Xi Kappa Chapter partnered with Hospice of the Red River Valley to offer continuing education units for nurses.

Xi Kappa Chapter will be sponsoring an educational event in March on the topic of mentoring. You can read more about this planned event in a separate item in this issue of the Chapter newsletter.

Members routinely receive e-mail announcements of upcoming Xi Kappa educational events. To receive e-mail announcements, the Chapter must have your e-mail address in the membership directory. This information is supplied from you through the Society office. If you are not receiving announcements, you may have failed to include your e-mail address with your membership renewal. To remedy this, remember to include this information the next time you renew, and meanwhile, forward a request to subscribe to the Chapter e-mail list administrator, Marjorie McCullagh at Marjorie.mccullagh@ndsu.edu

Chapter Leadership Transition Facilitated with Leader Outing

Xi Kappa Chapter welcomed new elected leaders with a late summer leadership outing. Outgoing, incoming, and ongoing chapter leaders participated in a kayaking trip on the Ottertail River near Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. This outing provided an informal environment for chapter leaders to get to know one another personally, and to share information about the chapter and their leadership roles. Eight leaders participated in the event: ongoing President Marjorie McCullagh, incoming Vice President Lindsay Bontjes, incoming Secretary Jane Lindblad, incoming counselors Barbara Matthees and Beverly Greenwald, and incoming Leadership Succession chair Sara Stetz.

According to President Marjorie McCullagh, ropes courses are a popular way for organizations to build teamwork. Because the Chapter did not have access to a ropes course and, according to Dr. McCullagh, “We couldn’t afford it anyway,” the Chapter chose to use a kayaking outing instead. Evaluation of the teambuilding activity was very positive, with leaders requesting to include a similar activity to facilitate future leadership transition.

Xi Kappa Board Holds Strategic Planning Retreat

ON December 7th a band of intrepid members of Xi Kappa Chapter-At-Large met at the NDSU downtown site to consider the state of Xi Kappa and consider the next few years of the organization. The members present included a broad range of backgrounds, including two new student members. The group was ably guided through the process by Sherlyn Dahl, Executive Director of the Family Healthcare Center. Over dinner and several hours, a vision statement was developed: To celebrate nursing excellence by developing and recognizing professional achievement.

A long list of ideas and plans was developed with an emphasis on celebration of our successes, supporting member growth both professionally and personally and acknowledging professional achievement through various mechanisms. Enhancing communication with members and incorporating members into Chapter activities were discussed at length, as was the goal of including (indeed, increasing!) evidence-based practice activities by and for members. The Board will act on many of the ideas and plans generated, seeking to include members throughout the process. Members’ thoughts and ideas are encouraged. To submit your ideas, contact a Xi Kappa Board member or Marjorie McCullagh
